A civil society group aligned to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) called CITEG Ghana, has thrown its weight behind Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng, the current Trade and Industry Minister, to become the next flagbearer of the governing party.
According to Alex Kweku Tetteh, the Founder and President of the group, the NPP flagbearership race has already been settled since delegates already know that Alan Kyeremanteng is the undisputed successor to Nana Akufo Addo.
He says Alan deserves to step into the exiting shoes of President Akufo Addo better than anybody else in the NPP, including current Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.
“Alan’s father supported NPP and President Kufuor including leading members of the NPP leadership are very much aware of this. I am therefore urging Vice President Bawumia to lend his full support to Alan while he waits for a better time to bounce back to the political scene. Kufuor told Akufo-Addo when the NPP won in the year 2000 that Aliu Mahama should be given the chance,” Kweku Tetteh stated in reports seen by Whatsup News.
“Akufo-Addo kicked against it and told Kufuor in the face that when you finish your term 8 years, go with your Running Mate so President Akufo-Addo should also exit with his running mate in 2024,” he said.
Already, the ruling NPP is bracing for a potential implosion towards the end of the term of President Akufo Addo.
It is an open secret that the President is grooming his Vice President to take over when he exits, but critics say Dr. Bawumia lacks the pedigree and charisma to carry such a massive party on his shoulders.
Besides, maintaining Vice President Bawumia would mean President Akufo Addo would have essentially succeeded in installing his suspected hegemony.
It is believed that Dr. Bawumia would be partnering with one of President Akufo Addo’s close relatives, especially, Ken Ofori-Atta, the Finance Minister-designate.
However, Whatsup News gathered that the other powerful bloc within the NPP from the Ashanti ethnicity and headed by ex-President John Agyekum Kuffour (the Kuffour Camp), will never agree for the hegemony to take root in the ruling party.
